Since the beginnings of the recording industry, jazz has been the folk music of the South. Names like Danny Barker, Mose Allison, and Randy Newman come to mind. Burke Ingraffia will very likely be another added to this list. A poet, a scholar, and a guitarist who can hold his own, Burke Ingraffia completes the whole package with his clear and beautiful voice.

As a child growing up in the 70’s in New Orleans, Burke was known to sing along to his favorite radio songs like The Meter’s They All Ask’d For You and Paul Simon’s 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. Later in life, Burke became saturated with the lyrical masterpieces of East Coast songwriters including David Wilcox, John Gorka, and Patty Larkin.

In the early 90’s, Burke studied guitar under two of New Orleans’ best, Hank Mackie and Steve Masakowski, as well as learning classical and jazz theory for two years in the jazz studies program at the University of New Orleans. In 1995, Burke would be invited to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to compete in the semi-finals of the Telluride Troubadour songwriting competition. Later, at the end of that decade, after recording Burke Ingraffia (BTI 9501) and Throwing Shadows at the Sun (BTI 9803) Burke would emerge back onto the local New Orleans music scene with a Master’s degree from the University of Dallas in the disciplines of literature and theology.

Good. is Burke Ingraffia’s third published CD. It is a buffet of styles, all neatly tied together by Burke’s singular vision and engaging wit. With the aid of producer and musician, Cale Pellick, Good. includes the swinging organ trio sound of Undercover and the bossa nova of She’s Just a Girl. Burke shows two sides of his simplicity in the funk tune, Everything is Wet and the folk ballad The Frame Maker. The last song on the recording Lazy Bones is a closing tribute to his love of the rhythm and street-beat spookiness of New Orleans.
